All students in K-2 receive instruction based on the Georgia Standards of Excellence.

The Pre-K students will also be under a similar set of standards called the GELDS. The GELDS are the product of an alignment study and revision project that began in 2010. The project stemmed from the need for higher-quality standards for birth through age 5 and a better alignment with the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS) for K-12. The purpose of the GELDS is to outline what children should know and be able to do before entering kindergarten.

English/Language Arts

First and second grade students receive whole group and small group instruction through the use of a balanced literacy program provided by Bookworms, a Comprehensive Reading Solutions program. Students participate in interactive, shared, and small group reading activities daily. These activities help improve your students' vocabulary, phonics, and grammar skills while increasing their reading abilities.

Kindergarten students focus on letters and letter sounds and work up to building words and sentences. Phonics and phonemic awareness are a large part of Kindergarten instruction.


Students receive instruction in both whole group and small group settings. Instruction is hands-on and manipulatives are used to help students understand math concepts and processes. Students are also involved in Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) through investigating problem solving strategies.

Social Studies

Social studies instruction, following the GPS, is organized around themes. Kindergarten has a focus on “Symbols of America”, first grade looks closely at “American Heroes” and second grade concentrates on “Georgia, My State”. Student performance is based largely on performance tasks, participation, and teacher observation.


Science is also based on guiding themes for each grade level. Major science concepts are “My World and Me” in Kindergarten, “Patterns” in first grade, and “Change” in second grade. All science concepts are taught with an emphasis on reading. Student performance is based on tests, performance tasks, participation, and teacher observation.


The early years of schooling are especially critical for handwriting. As a result, we encourage the proper mechanics.

Physical Education (PE)

Instruction concentrates on the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) for PE. Students are asked to wear sneakers and shorts. Shorts should be worn underneath dresses. If a child cannot participate in P.E., a written doctor or parent excuse is required.


Students participate in an integrated art program designed to provide a variety of mediums and processes for all to experience and to encourage individualism and creativity. Instruction is based on the Georgia Performance Standards.


Our music program strives to provide a foundation for basic music literacy and appreciation. Instruction is based on the GPS. The 2nd Grade chorus is a select group that works hard to put on two performances every year.


The curriculum is designed for teachers to teach basic information about the body, its care and welfare. Our health program is supported by our nurse assistant.

Special Education Services

These programs are available for those students who qualify for service in the areas of learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, intellectually disabled, speech and language impaired, hearing impaired, visually impaired, other health impairments and developmentally delayed. Special Education teachers provide instruction within the regular classroom (inclusion) and/or in small group settings (resource).

Gifted Education

Students in grades kindergarten through second in the Oglethorpe County School District who demonstrate a high degree of mental ability, academic achievement, creativity and/or motivation can be evaluated for the Gifted program. Eligibility criteria for placement in this program are determined by the State Board of Education. For a summary of eligibility criteria or for further information about the Gifted program, please contact the Gifted Education teacher at OCPS or Judy Spurgeon/Kanya Cornish, the Gifted Program Coordinators.

Early Intervention Program (EIP)

Children start school at a designated chronological age, but differ greatly in their individual development and experience base.  The Early Intervention Program (EIP) is designed to serve students who are at risk of not reaching or maintaining his/ her academic grade level.  The purpose of this program is to provide additional support to help the students reach grade level performance in the shortest possible time frame.

English Language Learners (ELL)

Additional instruction is provided to those students for whom English is a second language. State guidelines dictate eligibility for this program.

Media Center

A media specialist will help to make the media center a support for academic achievement for our students. Students in Grades 1 and 2 are able to check out 2 books at a time. Kindergarten students are able to check out 1 book at a time. Books should be returned within 2 weeks. If a book is lost or damaged, it must be paid for within a reasonable amount of time.
